Recycling initiative can create ‘real impact’, partners say
Mumbai-based maker of manmade cellulosic fibres (MMCFs) Birla Cellulose has signed a new memorandum of understanding with SaXcell, a Netherlands-based technology provider that specialises in solutions for recycling used textiles to produce feedstock for new MMCFs.
The companies believe that SaXcell’s textile waste pulping technology combined with Birla’s wet-spinning expertise can result in high-quality, sustainable recycled fibres that will “serve the circular textile needs of customers at commercial scale”.
Chief executive of the Dutch company, Erik van der Weerd, said: “Our combined innovation force and production power offer a great opportunity to create real impact.”
For his part, Birla Cellulose’s chief technology officer, Dr Aspi Patel, said: “We have been exploring innovative business models and partnerships; this collaboration is one such initiative. We aim to help SaXcell leapfrog from pilot to commercial demonstration scale. Such partnerships will play an increasingly important role in accelerating circularity in the global textile value chain.”
