Spray-drift warning from Cotton Australia

27/11/2023

The main representative body of the cotton industry in Australia has urged all farmers to remain vigilant and take appropriate action to avoid spray drift incidents.

Spray drift occurs when plant protection products affect areas other than the intended crop. Cotton Australia said the 2022-23 season was one of the worst on record for spray drift, with some farmers suffering millions of dollars’ worth of lost production.

“We need a whole-of agriculture response to minimise the impact of off-target drift,” said the organisation’s chief executive, Adam Kay. “It’s not just cotton growers who are suffering extreme hardship when drift from others impacts their crops, but grain growers and other farmers are being hit hard during spray season and there is no one-fix solution.”
