Cross-border textile project is under way
Textile and garment industry organisations, including Portugal’s ATP and Spain’s Fedecon, took part in the inaugural meeting of a new cross-border project at the end of January.
With European Union funding of more than €2.6 million, the new project, Resotex, has the aim of revitalising the textile industry in the area around the Spanish region of Extremadura and central and northern parts of Portugal.
Addressing the inaugural meeting in the city of Plasencia, a senior representative of local government in Extremadura, Esther Gutiérrez, said Resotex offered an opportunity to rethink the textile sector in this part of Europe.
She said a new textile sector could emerge there, with its focus on sustainable fashion, the circular economy and research into new materials.
“We also want to provide training to make sure we have a skilled textile workforce for the workshops that are beginning to spring up here now,” Ms Gutiérrez said.
