One theme that runs through our lead articles this time is the way the natural world is influencing the textile and apparel sector now.
First we learn about developments in using enzymes to break down synthetic fibres and make them recyclable and reusable. Following this, we find out about natural products that enterprising companies are beginning to use as sources of fibres and of textile auxiliaries.
Later in the magazine, we have articles about “a stretch-fibre breakthrough”, about growing demand among cycling apparel brands for bio-based fibres and about the ongoing desire among sports footwear brands to offer athletes performance gains. We also examine the expansion of a programme to collect and reuse natural down.
This issue of WSA closes with an eye-opening Dialogue piece featuring Emma Zwiebler, the acting chief executive of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry. She has referred to inactivity as ‘human’ climate change because of the seriousness of the long-term consequences for people’s health.
