Peru-inspired sneaker brand closes
The founders of shoe and apparel brand Perus have announced that the company has ceased operating after several years of losses, exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic.
Chief executive, Nicolas Langlois d’Estaintot, said the company’s fortunes had suffered a downturn in 2020 and, in spite of hard work and some new ideas that it has tried to put in place since then, it will now close down.
But he said he was pleased with what Perus had achieved in the course of a decade of activity.
Mr Langlois d’Estaintot founded the company in 2014 with two friends when they returned to France after backpacking in South America. They had spent a month in Peru and had been captivated by locally produced shoes with Inca motifs incorporated into the design.
They decided to set up their own brand to emulate these products, choosing Perus as the name. They promised to fund one day of school for children in disadvantaged communities in Peru for every product they sold.
In this way, their efforts have funded 450 years’ worth of schooling for those children.
