Action needed to maintain commitment to organic cotton, Oeko-Tex says

27/09/2024

Labelling and certification body Oeko-Tex has announced changes to its procedures and requirements for certifying organic cotton.

From April 2025, the Zurich-based organisation has said it will no longer allow companies to mention the term ‘organic’ in connection with its Standard 100 certification for cotton materials.

Oeko-Tex has a separate certification programme for organic cotton and it said it wanted to “strengthen the integrity” of this and make sure that “only genuinely trustworthy organic cotton” uses this label.

It said companies that want to present cotton fabrics or garments as organic should start work now to move from Standard 100 to its Oeko-Tex Organic Cotton certification.

It said this transition would allow companies to “maintain their commitment to organic cotton”.
