Buyers have regained confidence in Bangladesh, garment industry says

Leaders in the garment industry in Bangladesh have calculated that factory closures earlier this year cost the sector $400 million.

Social unrest that began in June led to the resignation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country in early August. It was June before the authorities in Bangladesh said garment factories were fully open and running again.

President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, told local media the industry is now stable, but he said the security forces still needed to continue to keep an eye on industrial facilities in case new protests break out.

He said buyers had “regained confidence” in the industry in Bangladesh, but warned that maintaining law and order was “essential for stability”.
