Additive manufacturing company goes through another ownership change

Forward AM, the former additive manufacturing division of BASF, has undergone another change in ownership.

BASF launched its original 3D Printing Solutions operation in 2017 after acquiring Dutch 3D filament manufacturer Innofil3D. The following year, the group also acquired Hamburg-based Advanc3D Materials, and French company Setup Performance.

Collectively, these businesses became BASF Forward AM in 2022 and brought Martin Back in as chief executive. Mr Back’s own-named turnaround company acquired this part of the BASF business in 2024 and relaunched it under the Forward AM name.

Now, Minnesota-based 3D printing solutions provider Stratasys has acquired the key assets and operations of Forward AM and will set it up as a new, standalone company within the Stratasys group. This new company will be called Mass Additive Manufacturing GmbH.

It said the Forward AM portfolio will remain open to all partners and platforms and that, with the backing of Stratasys, it would expand its offering.
