Plant-based Under Armour brand moves into shoes

Sports group Under Armour is to take its partnership with Portland-based start-up Unless Collective forward with a move into footwear.

Founded in 2020 by former senior adidas executive Eric Liedtke, Unless Collective was acquired by Under Armour in 2024, with Mr Liedtke becoming head of brand strategy at the Baltimore-based group.

Unless Collective insists on using only plant-based materials to create products that will “decompose rather than pollute” at end of life.

An inaugural joint clothing collection launched in April 2025. Now, Under Armour is to make Unless Collective footwear available to its customers too.

Three footwear styles make up the partnership’s first shoe collection: the York Low, the Govy Mid and the Seaside Slip-On. The shoes, too, are constructed only from plant-based materials and are completely plastic-free.

“In an industry where most footwear relies on plastics, petrochemicals, and synthetic dyes that linger in landfills for centuries, these silhouettes offer an alternative future,” Under Armour said.
