EU legislation on microplastic pollution enters into force
New European Union rules to prevent microplastic pollution from plastic pellets took effect on December 16.
The European Commission said the new rules would help encourage innovation and investment “in cleaner practices”, and support Europe’s transition to a sustainable economy.
All economic operators managing installations in the EU that handle 5 tonnes or more of plastic pellets per year must comply with the rules. This includes manufacturers, recyclers, converters, stockists and other handlers.
Operators must avoid, contain and clean up any spills or losses, as well as establish and implement risk management plans tailored to the nature and size of their installations.
Large and medium companies that handle more than 1,500 tonnes of plastic pellets annually must obtain a certificate of compliance or a permit. Simpler compliance requirements apply to small companies and micro-enterprises.
