Spanish first division football club Real Betis Balompié has worked with sports apparel brand Hummel to construct special shirts for a special match.

In 2020 the Seville-based club launched a sustainability initiative called Forever Green to promote, it said, environmental awareness through football.

Each season since then, it has singled out one game in its programme as a ‘Forever Green Match’. This season, the special game takes place on February 21, a league match against Rayo Vallecano.

Betis will wear special shirts for the match, developed with Hummel. The club said the shirts are constructed with “an innovative combination of materials with low environmental impact”. This includes fibres obtained from the skins of oranges.

Oranges are a symbol of Seville’s streets and neighbourhoods. Orange trees abound in the city and fruit falling to the ground in season is a familiar sight. Seville oranges are not immediately edible, but Betis pointed out that, for generations, local children have used them to develop early football skills.

To reflect this Hummel has added an orange pin-stripe to the team’s usual colours, green and white, for the special shirt.
