Biobased chemicals producer Afyren raises new capital

27/02/2026
French biotech company Afyren, based in Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon, has closed a new funding round bringing in €7 million. The company uses fermentation to transform agro-industry biomass waste into 100% biobased carboxylic acids. End-markets targeted by the company include 100% biosourced raw materials for polymers and chemicals along with lubricants and functional fluids for industrial applications, in addition to uses in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food.

Founded in 2012, the listed company has patented its technology which uses non-modified microorganisms. Life cycle analyses, based on pre-industrial data, have found that its biobased acids lead to significantly lower carbon emissions (five times lower). Its Afyren Neoxy biorefinery has been in operation since 2022. Located in a former petrochemical hub in Saint-Avold, in the east of France, it produces the company’s seven fully biobased organic acids, with zero waste and minimal water use, it said. This €80 million industrial project was supported by public and private investors. The EU’s Joint Undertaking Bio Based Industry platform contributed €20 million. Its current production capacity is 16,000 tonnes, and Afyren has plans to scale to 72,000 by next year.

A second plant is in the works with Thai group Mitr Phol, a producer of sugar cane and its derivatives. At full capacity this facility is expected to produce 28,000 tonnes yearly.

The new funds, the result of an increase in shares, represents 7.6% of the company’s capital.
