Stark warning about the future of textiles in Europe

The textiles industry’s main representative body in the European Union, Euratex, has said the sector is suffering “a continued erosion of competitiveness across Europe”.

In an economic update, it said textile and apparel manufacturers in Europe had reported declines in production, turnover and employment 2025.

Euratex president, Mário Jorge Machado, warned: “If Europe is serious about maintaining its manufacturing base, it must act faster and more decisively. Every week, textile companies are closing. Production moves elsewhere and the carbon footprint grows. That is the opposite of what Europe wants to achieve.”
