Three decades of organic cotton at Patagonia
Outdoor brand Patagonia is celebrating 30 years of its preferential option for organic cotton.
The company made the switch from conventional cotton to organic in 1996. It arranged field-trips for its teams to visit farms in California to develop an understanding of organic farming practices.
To help colleagues who were unable to take part in the field-trips, Patagonia then developed its own board-game, Organic Cotton Quest, using printed fabric for the board. People working in its stores could play the game, answering questions about organic cotton production as they moved pieces round the board.
Questions focused on the area farmers were devoting to organic cotton production at the time, the methods organic farmers were employing to combat pests and so on.
