Player feedback inspires ‘more forgiving’ Titleist mini driver
Just in time for the 154th Open Championship, which starts at Royal Birkdale on July 16, equipment developer Titleist has unveiled a new mini driver.
It describes the new club, the GTS300, as having “a more forgiving design”, with a larger head. Titleist said the club would offer golfers “exceptional distance, control and versatility” off the tee and from the fairway. The term mini driver means a club players can use in both settings.
The company said that the decision to incorporate a clubhead with a volume of 305 cubic centimetres (smaller than some conventional drivers, but larger than many fairway woods) was influenced by tour feedback. Specifically, it said two of its brand ambassadors, Justin Thomas and Cameron Young, had provided valuable input in the development of the club. Both players are competing at Royal Birkdale.
“The main goal in development was to make GTS300 a more forgiving mini driver,” said Titleist’s senior director of metalwood development, Stephanie Luttrell. “An increase in volume and shift in centre of gravity gave us approximately 15%–20% greater inertia. At the same time, we still put a premium on versatility and performance off the turf with this club.”
The club will be available in golf shops from July 23.
