Sock success for Nuyarn

Yarn and fabric innovator Nuyarn has announced new brand partnerships.

New Zealand-based Nuyarn uses proprietary spinning technology to make its fibres. This involves wrapping merino wool fibres around a performance filament.

It has also developed a technology it calls Strong Wool, transforming overabundant, coarse wool that was previously deemed unusable for apparel into “exceptionally durable, lightweight yarns that withstand extreme abrasion”.

Outdoor brands already using these materials to make socks include Kuiu and Trew. The company has now announced similar partnerships with Falke, Courier, Radio and Kathmandu.

For decades, Nuyarn said, performance wool was constrained by traditional ring-spinning methods that twisted fibres together, resulting in heavy, slow-drying yarns that hindered the natural performance of wool.

It said the production method it has developed results in “a loftier, more resilient structure”.

Sock brands are using Nuyarn materials to deliver durability, high levels of moisture management and comfort.

“The objective was never just to improve wool; it was to unlock the performance potential already present within the fibre," Nuyarn chief executive, Andy Wynne, has said. “We are bringing a level of durability and thermoregulation to the sock market that simply has not been possible with traditional yarn structures.”
