ITEC proposes academic body for textile training

Speaking at the two-day International Textile Education Conference, held in Chennai on July 2-3, Mr Mathivanan said that by 2010 India is set to be the second largest producer after China in the global textile business, moving up from the present 12th position.
“We don’t get workers to run imported looms; our workers need to be trained in modern technology in weaving, spinning and stitching. Presently industrial training Institutes train only a limited number of people, which is not sufficient for our expected growth,” he said.
He added that there was an urgent need to train more workers and to provide modern education for supervisors and textile engineers, which could help the country to produce ‘value added’ and quality fabrics to compete in the global market.
