Labour, management commit to promote social accountability in Philippines

25/11/2005

The Employers' Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) and major labour groups in the country recently entered into an agreement, the "Tripartite Commitment on Social Accountability", with the Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE).

The labour groups include the Trade Union of the Philippines and Allied Services (TUPAS), International Textile Garments and Leather Workers federation (ITGLWF), and the Trade Union of the Philippines (TUCP) and its affiliates.

The major labour and management organisations have agreed to cooperate and to be accountable in improving the working conditions of their workers in a bid to raise the worker's capability to compete in the global economy.

The signatories agreed to voluntarily incorporate mainstream social accountability into their programmes, specifically the adherence to core labour standards, safety and health of workers, recognition of workers rights, and good governance. They also agreed to cooperate in promoting social standards at the enterprise level and to hold regular dialogues on social accountability.
