Backpacks made from recycled plastic bottles

US company Earthpak has launched a line of backpacks that are made of 98% recycled materials, which are said to offer the same style and performance as other leading backpacks on the market.

The products are said to be made in an environmentally conscious manufacturing process which turns discarded plastic soda bottles into a valuable commodity with the average Earthpak bag using over 12 two-litre bottles which would otherwise end up in landfill sites.

The bottles are shredded into small pellets, then processed into a fine fibre, which is then spun into a yarn and woven into a durable fabric. The fabric is then dyed and sewn.

The proprietary fabric is custom-designed and woven exclusively for Earthpak and are specially designed not only to give the bags a distinctive look, but to add tensile strength to the product. The bag's surface is also treated with Teflon to enhance durability and abrasion-resistance.
