IBTec develops Thermograph

23/01/2006

The Biomechanics Department of IBTec – the Brazilian Institute for Leather, Footwear and Leathergoods Technology (formerly known as CTCCA), of Novo Hamburgo, has developed the Thermograph, a device that produces images of the temperature changes undergone by the feet while a person walks.

Thermography is one of the new tests offered by IBTec. The objective of the test is to record temperature changes at several points on the feet as the walking speed increases. To meet industry standards the temperature of the foot may increase by no more than 6°C when a person is walking in shoes. If the temperature rises above this level the shoes are considered unsuitable from the point of view of comfort and health. If temperature changes exceed 6°C, changes in the materials, components and processes in the manufacture of that style are recommended. Using the thermograph will help in conducting research into the materials and structural and dimensional aspects of shoes leading to a higher level of comfort and healthier feet.
