Juapong Textiles fails to resume production

14/04/2006

Ghanaian textile manufacturing company Juapong Textiles Limited which was scheduled to reopen early in April will not resume production as planned as a result of technical and other difficulties.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen had earlier announced that the company would resume operations in early April but has now stated that this is no longer possible due to a lack of essential equipment. He was also unable to clarify when the additional investment to cover this equipment could be obtained.

About 1,000 workers were retrenched following the closure of the facility in 2004 after its majority shareholder, VLISCO BV of Holland, pulled out of the company.

JTL’s demise follows the recent temporary closure of another local textile printing company which laid off about 700 of its workers.
