Nike Canada opens athletic complex made from recycled running shoes

19/05/2006

Toronto Mayor David Miller, and Canadian hurdler Perdita Felicien officially opened the new Nike Malvern Sports Complex in Scarborough, Ontario.

The soccer, basketball and track sports facility is said to be the largest of its kind in the world and is made from recycled shoe material, Nike Grind, from approximately 50,000 running shoes donated by Toronto residents and other Canadians.

It is hoped that the facility will benefit both the community and the environment as thousands of pairs of old running shoes were diverted from landfill to produce the surfaces for the new sports complex.

In addition to Nike Canada's $500,000 donation to build the complex, the company also donated an additional $50,000 in athletic equipment for the community.
