The Indian Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Jute Technology Mission (JTM) at a cost of Rs355.55 crore ($77.4 million). The Jute Technology Mission will benefit jute growers and workers engaged in the industry, as well as entrepreneurs and others employed in associated activities in the jute sector. It aims to assist in the modernisation of the industry and enable the country to reap the benefits of enhanced levels of jute diversification.

The jute sector occupies an important place in India’s economy, particularly in the eastern region, providing direct employment to about 260,000 workers, and supporting the livelihood of around four million farm families.
