Vietnam garment and textile exports affected by drop in US buying

15/08/2006

Data from the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) shows that the Vietnamese garment and textile industry remains stable, with export earnings of $600 million in July 2006. For the first seven months of the year, total export revenues were $3.36 billion, an increase of 25.8% over the same period in the prior year.

However, the sharp upward trend seen in the first six months did not continue for July due to a decline in Vietnamese textile exports to the USA. July export revenues were $196 million, a decrease of 15% compared with the previous month.

Vinatex forecasts that, despite the slowing of exports to the USA, Vietnam will continue to achieve the expected revenues from garments and textiles exports.
