A UK university student has designed a range of sportswear clothing for mountain bikers involving no stitching at all. Keith Sykes, who is studying for an MA in Performance Sportswear Design at the University of Derby, has created mountain bike wear that is entirely glued together using a special adhesive that bonds to different fabrics. Sykes believes the technique produces lighter weight garments using less material, and with a stronger seam that can be moulded into shapes.
The technique comprises overlapping the pieces, with adhesives then exposed to different temperatures, where they melt and then set to hold the fabric together. The high temperatures used mean that the material is not affected by household washing and is very strong. Pieces are also laser-cut before gluing, to prevent the edges fraying.
Sykes has been awarded a work placement in Switzerland with sporting goods and apparel company Scott to take his ideas forward.
