Bangladeshi exporters alarmed at port blockades

15/11/2006

Bangladeshi garment and leather exporters are feeling the impact of political protests, which are blocking ports and hampering export orders. The protests were called by the country’s former Prime Minister, Begum Hasina Wajid, along with 13 political parties, whose demands include the removal of the chief election commissioner and the reform of the election commission.

Tipu Sultan, chairman of the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association, said that with leather manufacturers exporting over half their products in the winter, and overseas buyers expressing concerns about shipment deadlines, the political crisis is having a detrimental effect on the industry.
