Pakistani soccer ball manufacturers and exporters have called on the government to provide funds to support research and development in the sporting goods industry.

Speaking at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry, chairman of the Pakistan Sports Goods Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (PSGMEA), Professor Sheikh Safdar Sandal, urged the government to increase research and development fundssimilar to those provided for the country’s footwear and textile industriesto give a necessary boost to the sporting goods industry. He also requested special incentives packages for the industry.

He added that investment to modernise the industry is required in order to adapt to a general change in production from hand-stitching to machine-produced soccer balls.
