Surge in sports store sales

The Monthly Retail Trade Survey, prepared by the US Census Bureau, has reported sales from sporting goods stores of $2.9 billion (preliminary) for September—up 22.7% from $2.37 billion in September 2005. This increase follows a 13.9% increase in August.
Sales for the first nine months reached $25.1 billion, up 14.2% on the comparable period in 2005.
Total sales for calendar year 2005 reached $31 billion, up 7.3% from 2004. The 2005 overall retail growth represented the strongest increase since the 8.4% gain of 1999.
