Apparel and consumer soft goods company Kellwood Company has reported an improvement in its third quarter results. Net sales for the quarter were down on the same period last year—slipping to $516.4 million from $520 million—however total net earnings were up, reaching $8.1 million, compared with $16.2 million in the third quarter in 2005.

On an ongoing basis, net sales were $516.4 million compared with $522.4 million, and net earnings were $17.6 million, compared with the $15.3 million reported in the 2005 third quarter. Net sales for women's sportswear fell 8% to $293.7 million, whilst men's sportswear increased 7% to $140.7 million.

Net sales for the first nine months totalled $1,469.8 million, compared with $1,515.6 million in 2005, and net earnings from continuing operations reached $14.5 million, compared with $14.7 million the previous year.
