Canada’s NDP motion to protect textile workers moves forward

15/12/2006

A motion put forward by
Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) calling on the Conservative government to contain the dramatic growth of clothing imports from China has been passed by the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade. It will now go on to the House of Commons.

With almost 50,000 workers employed in the apparel industry having lost in the last three-and-a-half years, the motion should protect those who have been adversely affected by the influx of clothing imports from China.

The safeguards envisioned would cap the quantity of clothing imports allowed into Canada, in the hope of protecting jobs.
