Engro launches apparel made of corn

04/01/2007

Indianapolis-based Engro, LLC, has unveiled a new apparel line made entirely of corn, at the Promotional Products Association International trade show (January 2-6) in
Las Vegas. The apparel uses Ingeo fibre that was developed by Cargill and Dow Chemical, and claims to be the world’s first and only greenhouse-neutral polymer, achieving a 68% reduction in fossil fuel use compared with traditional plastics.

The product is obtained by extracting sugar from the corn kernel. The sugar is then fermented and transformed into a high performance polymer and the Ingeo fibre is extracted. The remaining proteins, oils and fibres of the corn kernel can be used for livestock feed.

The fibre can be used in a variety of clothing, and in consumer goods including comforters, pillows, sleeping bags, packaging and carpeting.
