New self-cleaning, clean-smelling fabrics
According to reports, the US Air Force has developed a new coating technology to make fabrics water and stain repellent as well as anti-bacterial. Microwaves are used to fix microscopic nanoparticles to clothing fibres. Chemical properties can then be added for waterproofing and anti-bacterial properties. The coating process is apparently able to kill harmful bacteria and even anthrax and, when the efficacy of the coating wears off, the fabric can be restored. UK-based company Alexium has been licensed to develop the technology for sportswear and other civilian applications.
