Warm weather affects apparel sales over holiday period

16/01/2007

According to The National Retail Federation (NRF), unseasonably warm weather and a soft housing market had a noticeable impact on holiday sales of apparel in the
USA; however, the impact was not as severe as had been feared.

In December retail industry sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) rose 3.9% unadjusted over last year and increased 0.4% seasonally adjusted from November. November industry sales were revised down from 6.3% unadjusted to 5.1% unadjusted.

NRF represents an industry with more than 1.6 million US retail establishments, more than 24 million employees (about one in five American workers) and 2006 sales of $4.7 trillion. It will release its 2007 economic forecast on January 16, during its 96th Annual Convention and EXPO in New York City.
