Marks & Spencer launches £200 million 'eco-plan'
Marks & Spencer has unveiled its new ‘Plan A’, a £200 million ($393.6 million) ‘eco-plan’ which will affect every part of the company's operations over the next five years.
Chief executive Stuart Rose said, “We believe a responsible business can be a profitable business. We are calling this ‘Plan A’ because there is no 'Plan B'.”
He said that the company will only buy carbon offset as a last resort; will ensure that none of its clothing or packaging needs to be thrown away; much of its polyester clothing will be made from recycled plastic bottles rather than oil and over 20 million garments made from Fairtrade cotton will be on sale each year.
According to the founder director of Forum for the Future, Jonathon Porritt, who has advised M&S on ‘Plan A’, the company is hoping to raise the bar for other retailers and business across all markets.
The measures have also met with approval from Greenpeace
