P2i granted SATRA accreditation

Plasma enhancement technology company P2i Ltd. has received SATRA accreditation for its ion mask super hydrophobic surface enhancement. Originally developed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to protect soldiers from chemical attack, an ultra-thin protective modification is applied over the surface of the material by means of an ionised gas, or ‘plasma’, to repel water. For footwear, the process enhances the external surfaces as well as the inside, between and around the individual fibres in the shoe, and is said to be particularly effective on synthetic materials. The treatment, which is invisible to the naked eye, allows the foot to breathe conventionally through the open pores in the vamp fabric, but prevents water seeping into the shoe through the mesh and the seams by bouncing it off the surface. Unlike conventional waterproof technologies that require additional layers to be attached into the shoe during manufacture, ion mask is applied after the shoe has been manufactured and does not compromise the fit or weight of the shoe.
