New greener fibre from Foss

27/04/2007

Designer and manufacturer of non-woven fabrics and specialty synthetic fibres Foss Manufacturing has launched its new Ecospun fibre, made from 100% recycled plastic PET bottles. The fibre is made into garments such as fleece jackets and sweatshirts, which are said to be warm, durable, weather-resistant, lightweight and comfortable. The production of Ecospun may prevent almost three billion plastic PET bottles from being disposed of as landfill each year, as well as saving over half a million barrels of oil and eliminating 400,000 tons of harmful air emissions that contribute to global warming, acid rain and smog.

Foss' Ecospun has won awards for Environmental Excellence and Sustainable Development. The fibre has been independently certified by Scientific Certification Systems, meeting all testing standards including strength, shrinkage and colourfastness.

By blending the fibre with its Fosshield antimicrobial technology, the company has created an antimicrobial polyester fibre blend which is said to last for the lifetime of the garment. When woven or needle-punched into fabrics, it is said to inhibit the growth of destructive bacteria, mould, mildew and fungus.
