Crailar Fiber to develop bast fibre technology with ARC
Canada-based Crailar Fiber Technologies (CFT), a subsidiary of environmentally-friendly fibre and fabric producer Naturally Advanced Technologies, Inc., has entered into a agreement with the Alberta Research Council (ARC) for the development of bast fibre technology. Bast fibres are taken from plants such as jute, hemp and ramie.
Under the agreement, CFT has the option of an exclusive worldwide licence to use the new intellectual property developed by the Alberta Research Council on bast fibres including the development of a sustainable, organic moisture management fibre for both winter and summer performance apparel applications, currently referred to as Crailar X-Series, a high performance fibre that does not use harmful petroleum-based products.
The company will pay ARC a quarterly sum to support the collaboration and royalties on any sales.
