Nike winning back-to-school battle

A New York-based analyst firm has reported that checks it has carried out at 50 athletic footwear retail outlets show Nike to be the favourite brand of students returning for the new academic year.
Thomas Weisel Partners analyst
Jim Duffy said in a note to investors: "Despite some indications of softness in the athletic footwear category, Nike
products remain a source of strength in all channels of retail."
The exercise also suggested that Nike was able to sell a greater proportion of its products at full price, using 'exclusives' and limited offers, rather than discounts, to drive sales.
It also said that, while there appeared to be some softness in the basketball sector, Nike's second largest category, the running-shoes category was strong.
