Profits up at sports goods retailer

Canada's largest sporting goods retailer, Forzani Group, has reported a higher second-quarter profit and initiated dividend payments to shareholders.

The company, whose stores trade under the Sport Chek, Sports Experts and Coast Mountain Sports banners, earned US$5.1 million in the three months until the end of July.

Forzani said total revenue for the quarter, which includes corporate store sales, wholesale sales, service income, equipment rentals, franchise fees and franchise royalties was $277.5 million, up slightly from almost $270 million for the same time last year.

Same store sales in corporate locations rose 0.4% in the quarter, while same store sales for franchises were up more at 6.1%.
