Luccan textile sector finally shows signs of recovery

Second quarter production figures from the Lucca province in Tuscany show that the previously flagging textile and clothing sector could be on the road to recovery.

The region’s Chamber of Commerce posted a 1.2% increase for the textile and garment sector in the April to June period compared with the second quarter of 2006, despite higher production costs.

Follwing years of struggle, the rise, although slight, should encourage a more positive outlook among textile and apparel producers.

Other sectors posting positive results include footwear (+5.5%) and plastic and rubber (+7.1%).

According to Istat (the Italian statistics institute), exports from the national textile, clothing leather, footwear, and furniture sectors increased by approximately €300 million, year-on-year, in the first six months of 2007.
