Foreign competition blamed for Carhartt job losses

Workwear and outerwear company Carhartt is to convert its Michigan-based sewing unit into a distribution, a move that will see 33 of its 58-strong staff laid off on December 31. The firm believes overseas competition and free trade agreements are at the centre of the problem that has led to the change.
The union representing the company’s employees revealed that the situation had been on the cards for some time and that it had had to intervene six years ago in order to save the plant.
