ITUC seeks UN assistance for Myanmar

According to the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the UN urgently needs to step in if the current unrest in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is to die down.

Demonstrations have become commonplace in the country with Buddhist monks joining the ranks of protesters who are responding to massive fuel price increases.

Many textile and pharmaceutical factory workers have introduced strike action, which has led to the involvement of security forces.

UN special envoy to Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, has recognised the need for an "urgent solution" and ITUC general secretary, Guy Ryder, hopes bodies such as the European Union and ASEAN will push for a “return to democracy” and an end to military oppression.
