Reports indicate that owner of premiership football club Newcastle United, Mike Ashley, has increased his influence in the sportswear field by acquiring Scotland-based outdoor brand Nevisport.

Mr Ashley already owns sporting goods company Sports World and has a majority stake in outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment firm Field & Trek. He floated a 43% stake in Sports Direct International in February and owns the Karrimor rucksacks brand.

The Fort William-based outdoor goods company, which is said to have been struggling recently, was set up by climbers Ian Sykes and Ian Sutherland in a bid to improve the level of equipment available for outdoor activities. Named after the tallest UK mountain, Ben Nevis, the company has 12 stories across Scotland and northern England.
