A report compiled by the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters Association (ITKIB) reveals that the textile and apparel industry, which has been an integral part of the Turkish economy in recent years, has seen significant growth in the technical textiles field.

Overall textile and apparel operations account for 24% of the country’s industrial employment, and the report indicates that textile exports have grown rapidly in the 2000-06 period.

Turkey’s technical textile exports have more than doubled in the six-year period. In 2000, shipments were worth $405 million, while in 2006 exports totalled approximately $847 million. Germany was its largest export destination, accounting for around $147 million of its technical textiles.

Excluding apparel, textile exports totalled approximately $6.1 billion in 2006, up 12.2% compared with 2005.
