Brandix celebrates IMO recognition

Sri Lankan woven fabric processor Brandix Textiles has been granted fair trade and organic certifications from the Swiss Institute for Marketecology (IMO).

An IMO audit revealed that Brandix Textiles well exceeded the certification minimum of 172 with a performance rating of 214. It said that the company’s labour rights, working conditions, administration of the Fairtrade premium and accountability as a trade partner all contributed to its overall rating.

It hopes this certification will help in its aim of obtaining the Global Organic Textile Standard.

The cost of garments manufactured by Fairtrade certified companies are set to increase in order to cover higher sustainable production costs. According to technical manager, Paul Paramban, these extra costs will, in part, be used to support disadvantaged employees.

The company claims its Makandura mill in the Wayamba province is the largest fabric processor in Sri Lanka, employing 800 people and producing 3.5 million yards of fabric, with 400 variations per month. It is also said to be the country’s largest apparel exporter with annual turnover totalling more than $320 million.

Brandix produces activewear, textiles, knitted fabrics, intimate apparel and sewing threads, among other items.
