SIA releases 2007 Intelligence Report

22/10/2007

SnowSports Industries America (SIA) is to launch its 2007 Intelligence Report this week, a compilation of ten research studies on the snow sports industry. Celebrating its 30th annual update, the report provides insight into trends, sales, participation and demographics for the snow sports market. For the first time, it will include details on the internet sales channel in addition to specialty retail shops.

The report includes new stand-alone chapters for the alpine, snowboard, Nordic and apparel categories.

While the winter of 2006/07 will be remembered for its warmer temperatures and lower-than-average snowfall in many regions, snow sports continued to thrive and trends were apparent.

During the winter sales of snow sports equipment, apparel, and accessories from specialty shops and internet sales totalled $2.1 billion: $629 million in equipment; $813 million in apparel; $680 million in accessories.

All mountain snowboards were the hot trend, with an increase of 24% in units sold and 31% in value.

Internet sales totalled $341 million and 13% of all snowboard equipment was sold online.

Approximately 5% of Americans (seven years or older) participated in winter sports more than once a year, approximately 13.3 million people. Furthermore, 53% of snowboarders reported riding outside of resort areas at least once and 40% of snowboarders also ride a skateboard.
