Brooks Sports launches biodegradable midsole
Seattle-based performance running company Brooks Sports, Inc. has introduced BioMoGo, a biodegradable midsole. The new product is said to biodegrade 50 times faster than conventional athletic shoes and includes a non-toxic, natural additive to increase the rate of biodegradation.
While traditional ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) midsoles can last up to 1,000 years in an enclosed landfill, tests indicate that BioMoGo can biodegrade in roughly 20 years when placed in the same environment. This could save the company nearly 30 million pounds of landfill waste over a 20-year period.
It also offers runners more cushioning and rebound, less wear and consistent performance across varied temperature ranges.
The midsole will make its debut in the Trance 8 premium support shoe on July 1, 2008 and it will be incorporated in all shoes in the company’s performance running footwear collection by the end of 2009.
