German chemicals company BASF is to expand its production capacity for epsilon-caprolactone (CLO), with first phase expansion to increase annual capacity by up to 2,000 metric tons in 2008. Further increases are likely to take place in subsequent years.

The company has been producing CLO since 2001 and it is currently made at its Freeport, Texas, site. CLO and its polymers are used as intermediates in a variety of applications in many industries including TPU, adhesives and coatings.

The company’s intermediates division develops, produces and markets more than 600 products. Among other applications, intermediates are used as starting materials for textile fibres, coatings and plastics.
