South Africa extends textile incentives

27/11/2007

Reports indicate that the South African government has extended its textile and clothing duty credit certificate scheme (DCCS) until the end of March 2009. The incentive programme offers manufacturers and exporters import duty rebates.

The sector will welcome the move, having struggled to increase its export levels and plan ahead. Many have already lost their jobs as companies were forced to cancel contracts having received no assurance of support.

The textile and apparel industry reportedly accounts for almost ten per cent of the country’s manufacturing jobs but the industry has found it difficult to compete internationally against an influx of cheap textile goods.
