Nadal receives special footwear care

World tennis number-two, Rafael Nadal, has been training and playing for two years with a "very serious" foot injury, according to his coach (and uncle) Toni Nadal. This has led to reports in the Spanish press that only special footwear from Nike has enabled the player to keep going.

Today, Nadal urged his fans not to worry, saying that his career was certainly not in danger and insisting that he had been able to maintain an intense regime of training and tournaments since 2006. This contrasted with comments his uncle had given to local media in Mallorca, suggesting that the high levels of inflammation on the left foot of the three-times winner and reigning champion at the French Open constituted a "very serious" injury.

Rafael Nadal said on Spanish television today that his form over the last two years proved that there was no career-threatening problem.
